I'm glad they got to go up but it was a bit disturbing especially when the news anchor said they saw a "few things" fly off but weren't really sure what. And they supposedly hit a bird.
As a gov't engineer, i assure you that the people in the day-glo orange flight suits are brave motherf*ckers. They are sitting on top of a hydrogen bomb, assembled entirely of components sold to NASA by lowest cost bidders.
We all take these adventures for granted...the fact that they can get to space AT ALL is a technological marvel. Every time one of those Thermos-Bottles-on-Steroids blasts off, i am in awe of the science behind it all.
But then again, i have the same reaction when i play with my iPod...
I propose an International "Thank A Nerd" day. What do you think? Remember those dork-boys who played with rockets and computers in high-school that couldn't buy a date, and were frequently de-pants and duct taped to the flag pole? Next time you see a dork, buy him a beer. You never know what he'll invent tomorrow that will make life more fun...

My thoughts exactly, but sitting here watching the live feed from NASA like any good, non-procrastinating Ph.D. student would. Fingers crossed.
